Shotokan has spread to become the most widely practised style of Karate throughout the world
Its structured training system creates self-discipline and improves behaviour in many aspects of peoples lives as well as developing fitness strength and suppleness
During the Easter holidays the KUGB held their annual Train with the Champions residential course. in the beautiful picturesque "English Riveira". This is an intense week long course consisting of two to three classes a day under the expert tuition of their Technical commitee. All of which are 8th Dans and some of the most senior and well known Karate practitioners in the world!

We are very proud to say that our Sensei Greg Hegarty 6th dan was invited onto this impressive line up as the first ever Guest Instructor in the 41 years the courses have been running!

On Saturday 2nd April one of our Instructors and elite competitors Niall Gilligan took part in his first full contact karate fight at the 1st UFCK Full Contact Karate Gala winning with a 3rd round stoppage!
Although the evening was not something we are used to Niall performed outstandingly in the fight itself and with great dignity and respect throughout, particularly to his opponent at the end!
Firstly we would like to thank the organisers for the opportunity and their fantastic hospitality throughout the night!
We would also like like to thank the supporters that came out in force to make the atmosphere electric!
Thank you to @simonodowd for providing him with top quality training gear to prepare with
Finally we would like to thank and congratulate his opponent Max Threadwell and his coach who had obviously prepared tirelessly in the build up to make it such a fantastic match up!

Yesterday we took a small team to the KUGB Shotokan Cup (National Individual Championships for Black and Brown Belts)
The standard of competition was very high and our team again performed with desire and showing a lot of skill.
Valuable experience gained for our younger members Ayla, Owais, Sam and Zain.

I’d like to give a special mention to Abhi and Sarvesh who were in a very tough category showing massive improvement and a very strong attitude, both reaching the quarter finals (missing out on a medal by one fight).

Notable results
GOLD - Thomas in the Junior Mens Kumite
SILVER - Aman in the 10-11 year old Kumite
BRONZE - Mia in the Girls Under 5ft 3 Kumite

Also both Aman and Thomas reached the Semi Final of their Kata events narrowly missing out on the final.
Congratulations to them all!
